Shazar Elementery School is located in Noah Ofer council area in the Southern Part of Tel Aviv in Israel. The school was named after Zalman Shazar, the third president of the State of Israel. In recognition of his vast intellectual achievements and extensive Zionist activities, the Israel government appointed Shazar the first minister of education and culture in 1949, and in 1963 the Knesset elected him president of the State of Israel, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. In memory of Zalman Shazar many places in Israel were given his name, so was our school.
The population of the area is heterogeneous.
Most of the children are newcomers from the former Soviet Union.
Almost all of them are bilingual and speak two languages: Hebrew
and Russian. The school consists of 14 classes from first through
sixth grade with a special program for the special education
classes. There are 310 children in the school. The school, being
rather small, enables professional and multi- disciplined teacher
staff to concentrate on each and every individual's ability and
answer most of the educational needs of its students with a wide
and varied study program including enrichment classes and after
school activities, in other words, the students are in the center
of the learning process. The school is composed of a three story
building with two computer labs, a language room and library.

A letter from the English teacher
My name is Janna and I am an English teacher at Shazar Elementery School. I represent my school . Since September 1998 Shazar School is involved in the internet e-mail project, which will develop into additional activities in the classroom. No longer will English be a 5-hour affair per week, but it will be thread of interdisciplinary cooperation within the school and beyong it. The Internet will encourage our kids, even the beginners and the slow learners, to communicate in English, not in Hebrew, to be kept updated here to what is going on the Internet and to be given up to find information. And I am sure that the kids will be taking to English like the proverbial duck to water.. This project means regular exchanges of letters with one of the schools from an English speaking country. Each student will have a pen-pal from someplace in the world which he'll e-mail him throughout the whole year. I would like the students to get to know something about particular country, state, culture, society. This project covers the use of e-mail. I thought of the following schedule:
Twenty one 5 graders are participating in this project. This is their third year of learning English as the second language. The average age is 10-11.
Sincerely,
Janna and the members of Shazar School
